ELAH - center for coping with loss

ELAH - center for coping with loss is a professional NPO that offers mental support to all Israeli citizens. In times of personal crisis and sorrow after loss, when loneliness and isolation become unbearable, we can offer support during the difficult grieving process. Our highly trained staff of professionals provides a wide variety of treatment methods for individuals and groups, as well as a large range of social activities.

Established in 1979 by Dutch immigrants, Elah is the most veteran NPO in Israel to provide psycho-social assistance to Holocaust survivors. Our field of operation has expanded with the years, and for the past decades Elah has been a leading institution in the treatment of loss, aiding thousands of people who suffered bereavement, trauma and mental difficulties. We operate nation-wide, without waiting lists, and with sensitivity to the specific needs and cultural background of our clients.

Elah cooperates with a large number of governmental bodies and NPO's and keeps developing new treatment approaches in accordance with changing needs to advance professional care and to contribute to a better society.

Our services cover three main areas:

Support in coping with loss and bereavement

  • Six aid centers for legal and mental assistance to families bereaved by homicide (the SNEH program), operated on behalf of the Israeli Ministry of Welfare. The aid includes general support of a social worker, individual therapy, support groups, legal help from the Ministry of Justice, and a yearly remembrance ceremony.
  • A spiritual care program for people dealing with bereavement, operated on behalf of the Israeli Ministry of Welfare.
  • With financial support of the Ministry of Finance we provide individual therapy at home to elderly Holocaust survivors as well as a large range of group activities in homes for the elderly, day-care and welfare centers – free of charge. For Holocaust survivors that are not eligible for state funding we prove services free of charge with the help of private donors and foundations.
  • Treatment for family members of fallen soldiers and victims of terror attacks, on behalf of the Ministry of Defense. Elah also treats family members not eligible for state support, such as grandparents, uncles and girlfriends with the help of private donors and foundations.
  • Treatment for family members coping with loss on behalf of other aid organizations.

General Treatment

  • Elah provides individual, group, couple and family treatment to adults, youth, children and the elderly.
  • When our financial means allow it, Elah subsidizes treatment for clients who are not eligible for financial support from other sources through the "Elah for Everyone" fund, subject to the need and the financial situation of the client. Many NPO's ask Elah to provide their target populations with subsidized treatment.
  • Elah operates groups for immigrants and refugees with a similar cultural background, groups and workshops for the elderly, and trainings and workshops for professionals and volunteers of other organizations.

The Dutch Community

Elah was originally established by and for the Dutch community which until today is one of our main target populations. They enjoy mental treatments, social groups, a yearly Holocaust Remembrance Ceremony, special events, and a large group of volunteers who visit the elderly and organize group activities under supervision of Elah's social workers.

Our partners

Elah cooperates with a number of Israeli Ministries, with The National Insurance Institute, with Tel Aviv University on internships for students of social work, various municipalities, as well as with a large number of non-profit organizations.
